In this 7 minute segment (download iPod compatible, 38MB), Carrie Hensel describes Inner Circle Media's staffing model. Currently, they have six core employees beyond the founding partners and frequently hire in contractors. Contractors typically engage in coding and other back-end work that does not involve client contact. Design and project management are front-end activities, and Inner Circle does not outsource these positions.

When I asked Carrie about offshoring, she went on to further describe the work environment. Much of the office is open, and communication between people working on a project is tight and easy. Offshoring a project would require tight specifications that might not meet what the client needs as their views on the project evolves. However, if Carrie had a project with components that could be tightly specified in advance, she would offshore.

Carrie Hensel describes Inner Circle’s policies regarding staffing and the hiring of full time and contract employees. Inner Circle has six full time employees and hires contractors as needed according business levels. Many of the full and contract employees were recruited as interns from college. Carrie says that recruiting from local colleges is one of the best ways to find qualified talent. The contract employees of Inner Circle tend to handle back end work such as coding and programming. The full time employees tend to handle front end, face to face, work with the customer. Front end work includes project management and design. The point was made that it is critical that if a company chooses to outsource that it must only outsource back end work. Front end work should be performed by full time employees of the company. Interaction with the client should be avoided by contract employees. It was asked if Carrie ever considered outsourcing off shore. She said that Inner Circle had never outsourced off shore but she would consider it. Her main concern about off shore outsourcing was problems arising with communication and coordination on projects. Right now at Inner Circle communication flows easily. They have an open office structure and if one person has a question they can easily walk over someone else and ask a question. If they outsourced off shore there could be delays in communication which could result in quality problems with the product. Dan McDougal
