In this 14 minute segment (download iPod compatible, 70MB), Tim Daley, CEO, introduces us to his company Crime Cog. In a nutshell, Crime Cog's business is connecting all the islands of information in the criminal justice system from police to sheriff to courts to corrections to parole. There are three components of the value Crime Cog proposes to these constituents:

  • Reduced maintenance. The separate agencies no longer have to maintain their own systems, including hardware, networking, and software.
  • Increased efficiency. In a traditional arrest, officers may need to enter a detainees demographic information 28 times and have to physically transport data between agencies. All of that is eliminated in Crime Cog's system.
  • Increased effectiveness. Using publicly available data from multiple agencies, investigating officers are better able to connect the dots in investigations.

Crime Cog's initial customer focus has been police agencies. With this segment, they have found strong network effects leading them up to higher and higher levels of spending authority including sheriffs departments and county executives.

In future segments, we will learn how Crime Cog assembled the resources to pursue this strategy and its future goals.

Crime Cog provides information management solutions for the criminal justice community, connecting individuals and agencies from local law enforcement and county jails to prosecutors and parole officers. Their system is innovative in that it is entirely web based and can be accessed from any area with cell phone coverage. This eliminates the expense of building an entire infrastructure from the ground up, and opens up the markets of small law enforcement communities. Marketing efforts began on the local level. As use of the system has become more widespread and well known, sales are now occurring at the county level. There are market barriers beyond this in the form of internal IT departments that feel threatened by the innovation. In the smaller markets, there isn’t competition from other companies who cannot affordably provide this service to small communities, and there are not internal IT people to resist the change. The package provided by Crime Cog is remarkable in its ease of use and affordability. It is very accessible. Considering the amount of redundancy it eliminates from the work flow, it provides cost savings on many levels. It also facilitates collaboration between different agencies, giving law enforcement officers access to the tools they need to do their jobs. I’m really interested to see how far this could go. Hearing about the resistance on the state level was not encouraging. But everyone should admit that the law enforcement community needs this sort of information sharing, collaboration, and work flow -- not just at the state level, but at the national level as well. We’ve all heard of the costly failed attempts at creating software solutions for federal law enforcement agencies. I would like to know more about how this innovation has affected collaboration between different agencies. I’ve heard about “turf” issues between agencies that don’t want to share information. Is there any truth to that? If so, could Crime Cog’s software solutions change that? Rachel Ouillette EMU Student

Online System Changing the World Crime Cog links local law enforcement with the sheriffs, courts and prosecutors offices in any area. Including county, city, state or country. This system can track a case from booking to parole. This system will cut down on paper trails and redundancy with entries. Crime Cog also gives a feeling of safety because no mater what natural or human disaster that could possibly occur this information will remain safe within the system. Because the system is linked to all of the criminal justice offices there is a lower maintenance on the system and also get this areas of law enforcement to become more efficient at doing there jobs. This is a great strategy that is extremely effective in today’s society due to the declining socioeconomic system and cut backs that are being made to the law enforcement industry. With this new client application more law enforcement jobs can be saved due to the time saved on paper work which is converted to actual man hours on the job. This equals strategic planning instead of tedious work. The unique aspect of this application is that as long as there is a cell phone server. The server for Crime Cog is available. Now smaller counties are able to get this service as long as there is cell phone connection. This new technology is amazing at is shows how information can be in multiple places at a time and the speed to which it can be accessed doesn’t change. This process is also great for the environment as it cuts down on the amount of paper used to track crimes. This also lowers the amount of driving that officers and officials must do in order to transport paper work that will lower the amount of fuel used. This technology is improving many aspects of the criminal justice system by a landslide. Nicolet Horrington

Tim Daley, had look into the world found a problem, and found the solution to that problem. Tim Daley is the CEO, of Crime Cog, which links the different elements of law enforcement by having them all use one system that can be accessed by all of them. This is system that was long needed, as commutation in any sort of work is important, even more so, in one such as law enforcement that protects the well being of citizens. Young entrepreneurs can learn from Paul, as to what type of company to start, just look what is out there, the world, and what problems arise from already establish companies. By doing some research you can take an idea, bypass mistakes that have already been made by other companies and be on your way to being the head of the industry. Currently Tim has a very niche market of just bring together law agencies, but he can take this idea, and with small adjusting to his systems he could sell it to, emergency response teams, and larger companies that need help bring together all of there different departments, that have many parts in more then one place. Paul has come up with an idea that started with a specific purpose, but that can be adapted to many applications. This is definitely a lesson to entrepreneurs of how to find a problem, and bring a solution to that problem Richard Higgins

Tim, I think that your idea is great for solving the problem of redundency within the criminal justice system. I enjoy hearing about people who try to help the little guy who many people forget about. Those little guys being the 3 police officers in Ontennagon, MI who do not have the support they need to have their data on a web based system. I am a little confused though on how much data is shared. That being if a person from Michigan was in Arizona and got arrested, would a Michigan police officer be able to view the information about the arrest if the offender was now back home and being investigated. It seemed to me from the video that only the local officers of one community would be sharing data. Also, who would input all the past data into the new Crime Cog system so that the history is there to be researched. After completing a business plan for one of my classes at EMU I realized how indepth you must go when thinking about all the different aspects of the business and thats why I am probing for more information. Other than that I believe your idea will be well accepted within local governments because it will cut costs and time and will allow officers to spend more time out on the streets keeping them safe. I was really fascinated by your interview because my major is Public Law and Government and I hope to go to Law school some day and has a lawyer it is very important for me to make sure that all the evidence and files are correct and easy to access when ever I need it. Crime Cog is a software services provider that links together law enforcement agencies, governmental agencies, and attorney offices together so that they information that they input can be accessed by the other departments without any trouble and it saves a lot more time then having to call up the different departments then wait for them to send it to you. I think that Crime Cog is in a good market because in today’s world law enforcement agencies want an effective way of storing files so that it is easy to access, and they want a program that they do not have to maintain has much and Crime Cog offers this service. The most important thing that Crime Cog offers is that it is very effect and it makes officers job a lot easier especially when they are trying to connect the dots on a case. Crime Cog has a lot of competition from different IT departments that the county’s already have set up and it is very hard to compete with an internal department because the state is always worrying about making jobs available for people. I think that if your infrastructure is messed up it is a lot easier to get Crime Cog because it will eliminate the amount of work that these IT personal have to do daily and it guarantees that all the information is there and easily accessible. The advantage that I see Crime Cog has is that you can access there data with a cell phone which is really important especially if you need a file but there is not computer around you. Has a future attorney I feel that Crime Cog would be important software to get because it makes accessing files a lot easier, you don’t have to maintain it has much, and it is very effective. I think that this company will go very far in the near future because in today’s market people want information faster and easily accessible. Best Regards, Gary Warren EMU Student

Tim Daley, I think that Crime Cog is a great tool for making the job easier. People want information faster and faster nowadays and Crime Cog provides this service. Not only can you access information faster, but it is easier accessible. I can't believe that you can even access data with a cell phone. That is pretty neat! I think the main advantage of this system is that it reduces redundancy from the work flow and provides huge cost savings. I think that it is great to be able to collaborate all of the material and data between different agencies and to be able to provide information sharing. Some other benefits are reduced maintenance and increased efficiency and effectiveness. I think that this would be great for other companies also who need to bring together all of their information into one easy accessible system. Crime Cog brings a solution to a huge problem at hand and I think that many other companies can benefit from this great technology. Lauren Lozen, Student Eastern Michigan University

Tim, I think the most crucial point of this service is efficiency. It seems that in today's market, in almost every field, efficiency seems to be a major concern. We are very concerned with the efficiency of our automobiles, our electricity, our water, etc. It is great to see that a company can benefit the cause of efficiency the way your company is doing. I believe that by minimizing the amount of paper work and redundancy we can create a much more safe envirnoment. Police officers can concentrate on their concern of public safety rather than paper work. Another great point you made was the ability for many different offices to be connected. It is very difficult to accomplish a goal, whatever it may be, if there is a problem with communication. Communication should definitely be a conceren in public safety. The ability of all these offices to stay connected in such an efficient way, as you mentioned, seems to be a great stride in not only communication but public safety as well. Crime Cog seems to be a way of the future. I truly hope that people take note of your wonderful outlook and make a change towards the future. Emily Bender EMU Student
