Vinay Gupta, CEO and founder of Janeeva, shares with us how he brought Janeeva from idea to going concern. Overall, the process was quite methodical, starting with academic research, then assembling a team, gathering early stage investors, getting initial customers, and finally coming to market. Highlights from this segment include:

  • Vinay hit on the idea of creating a service that would help companies manage their outsourcing relationships while he was taking a "sabbatical" from working by teaching at University of Michigan.
  • One of the first questions that he researched was whether the idea had any real economic opportunity. During this time, he was very free about sharing his ideas.
  • He decided to use angel investors on this venture, and they joined his board.
  • The initial target for the service was small to medium businesses. However, the greater opportunity turned out to be in Forbes Global 2000 companies because they needed more help managing more complex outsourcing relationships.

Janeeva might be called the data normalization and measurement hub of business process outsourcing. Janeeva helps its customers look at multiple outsourcing relationships through one lens. It's not enough to just connect customers and sellers. They have to speak the same language.

We continue our Network Businesses series with Vinay Gupta, CEO of Janeeva. Much like 9thX.com, the first company we interviewed in this series, Janeeva makes its business by connecting customers and sellers. In this case, the customers have outsourced some of their business activities to the sellers, and Janeeva is helping the sellers communicate back operational measurement data to the customers.

Some highlights in this segment:

  • Janeeva works primarily with Global 2000 companies. These companies outsource in excess of $100 Million per year to 3 – 12 service providers.
  • Customers outsource to achieve best of breed services. Measurement is critical to monitoring the success of the enterprise.
  • Janeeva takes measurement data from multiple service providers, normalizes it so it is comparable, and presents it in a portal for customers to access.
  • Customers already have rights to the data, so Janeeva does not have to negotiate its own deals with service providers.
